The entertainment industry is paying tribute to David Lynch, with Steven Spielberg remembering the iconic director as a "visionary dreamer."

David Lynch, the filmmaker celebrated for his uniquely dark and dreamlike vision in such movies as “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive” and the TV series “Twin Peaks,” has died just days before his 79th birthday.

The renowned director mixed melodrama and horror in movies such as “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive.” He helped trigger a TV revolution with “Twin Peaks.”

Longtime friend and collaborator Kyle MacLachlan paid tribute to Lynch on Instagram: “Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me out of obscurity to star in his first and last big budget movie. He clearly saw something in me that even I didn’t recognize. I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision.
