The Trump administration launched an immigration enforcement blitz in Chicago on Sunday that includes several federal agencies that have been granted additional authorities to arrest undocumented immigrants in the US,

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department does not anticipate major changes in how it cooperates with federal immigration authorities even as officials across the country prepare for an expected crackdown on undocumented immigration under the new presidential administration.

Chicago residents, especially in immigrant circles, have been on edge for months in anticipation of large-scale arrests touted by the Trump administration.

Top Trump administration officials, including “border czar” Tom Homan and the acting deputy attorney general, visited Chicago on Sunday to witness the start of ramped-up immigration enforcement.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, appointed by President Donald Trump, will oversee the efforts of the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshall Service, and federal prosecutors.

The number of arrests was uncertain. Illinois officials, including the governor, said they had not been given advance notice.
