Following his departure from the United States men's national team, Gregg Berhalter will return to Major League Soccer to become the head coach and sporting director of the Chicago Fire. It's Berhalter's first time back in the league since leaving the Columbus Crew in 2018 to become the head coach of the USMNT.

Former U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter is on his way back to MLS. The Chicago Fire hired Berhalter as their new head coach and director of football, the club announced Tuesday. Berhalter has been without a job since being fired as USMNT head coach last summer following the team’s poor showing at the 2024 Copa America.

Gregg Berhalter will assume his role after the Chicago Fire's 2024 MLS season concludes as Frank Klopas was named Vice President of Football.
