Kohl's says it plans to close 27 of its more than 1,150 locations by April. The 66 locations Macy's announced are among the 150 it's closing as part of its "Bold New Chapter" initiative "designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth."

The Statesman Journal reported on the closure last week. Macy's corporate office did not respond to questions, but a list of closures released on Jan. 9 confirmed the closure of the Salem location, along with 65 other Macy's stores throughout the country.

Will Brevard County lose any of its Macy's or Kohl's locations? The two department stores are closing many throughout the country.

Macy’s is not the only retailer to announce store closures to start the year. Kohl’s is also closing 27 stores by April, The Associated Press reported. The stores are located in 15 states and is only about 2.3% of the company’s 1,150 locations.

The closures are part of Macy's "Bold New Chapter" strategy, which was announced in February 2024. The reorganization, the company revealed at the time, involved closing 150 stores nationwide within three years and a pivot to a greater focus on luxury sales.
